BSc. DIALYSIS TECHNOLOGY (BSc DT)

The B.Sc. Dialysis Technology is a professional undergraduate degree programme designed to prepare competent Dialysis Technologists capable of delivering quality renal care services. The programme provides comprehensive theoretical knowledge and structured clinical training in various dialysis procedures and nephrology care settings.

Dialysis Technology plays a crucial role in the management of patients with acute and chronic renal failure. The programme aims to develop qualified professionals skilled in performing dialysis procedures safely and effectively under the supervision of Nephrologists.

Curriculum

At the end of the course, the student shall have obtained:
  • Adequate theoretical knowledge of the various forms of dialysis.
  • Knowledge of the indications, contraindications, and complications of dialysis procedures.
  • Knowledge of dialysis equipment and water treatment systems.
  • Understanding of common diseases causing kidney failure and their clinical manifestations.
  • Knowledge of appropriate investigations commonly used in patients with kidney diseases.

Skills

At the end of the course, the student shall be able to:
  • Perform Hemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis, Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), Plasmapheresis, and other extracorporeal therapies under supervision.
  • Handle dialysis equipment and water treatment plants and carry out routine maintenance
  • Identify and manage complications occurring during dialysis procedures

Course Outline

First Year:Foundation subjects including Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, Biostatistics, and Principles of Nursing. Students are introduced to dialysis unit postings for basic procedural exposure.

Second Year:Applied subjects related to Dialysis Technology including Applied Anatomy & Physiology, Pharmacology, Pathology & Microbiology, Introduction to Renal Diseases, Nutrition, and Basics of Dialysis Technology, along with clinical postings.

Third Year:Advanced study in Dialysis Technology, Hemodialysis, Specialized Extracorporeal Therapies, Critical Care Nephrology including Renal Transplantation, Medical Ethics, Biomedical Engineering, and Biomedical Waste Management with structured clinical training in the Department of Nephrology

Fourth Year:Compulsory Internship with full-time clinical training in the Dialysis Unit.Duration of the Course
